A Tennis Clinic with Martina Hingis and Maui Jim Sunglasses

It’s not Wimbledon without Pimms and Strawberries and cream

Being such a massive tennis fan, the chance to be on the same court as tennis sensation Martina Hingis can’t really be ignored. The middle Sunday of the Wimbledon fortnight finds us at the Wimbledon Club (opposite the AELTC) for a day of tennis at the invitation of Maui Jim. We were to be coached by both Martina Hingis and Dan Bloxham, head coach of the All England Club.

Martina is the former WTA number one and as of the last weekend, the holder of 2 new Wimbledon titles, the Ladies Doubles with Sania Mirza and the Mixed Doubles with Leander Paes. What a feat to be back on Centre Court 17 years after winning her first Wimbledon at the tender age of 17.

What a privilege it was meet her and to be on the same tennis court with her. It was quite amazing to find a main draw tennis player take time out in the middle of a tournament to spend time with us plebs.

The whole group of us had great fun, spending a few hours running around the court, being fed afternoon tea with Pimms, strawberries and cream and being entertained by a couple of Polynesian dancers.

Maui Jim Sunglasses with polarised lenses

This fun Wimbledon event was sponsored by Maui Jim sunglasses. Maui Jim is a the official sponsor of the ATP tour with Ambassadors Martina Hingis and David Ferrer. They are the fastest growing premium polarised sunglass maker in the world.

We might not be too familiar with this brand in the UK but in the US, there is a cult following, according to a New Yorker friend. As the name suggests, this brand originated in Hawaii

We got to take a pair of Maui Jim sunglasses on a test drive during this tennis clinic. Their sunglasses are very light and great for sport but they look like fashion sunglasses and can be worn daily too. I wore them to play tennis for a few hours and I hardly felt it, very comfortable fit.

The pair that I have has adjustable nose piece which you can adjust to your comfort. They are made of anti-bacterial material and do not slip, even when you are playing a sweaty game of tennis. The fit is not overly snug and I was very impressed that they don’t slip or fall off, even after a couple of hours of sweaty tennis.

This was my first pair of sunglasses with polarised lenses and what a discovery. The colours were brighter and the details were cleaner. The lenses react to the different levels of light. Outdoors, it filters out the harsh light and when indoors, it will automatically adjust to the dimmer light. What’s really interesting is how you can see vibrant colours on this painting through the lenses and not with the naked eye.

The lenses are shatter resistant, which is one of the main considerations when I look for sports sunglasses. I love that they have styles which don’t look sporty so you can use them daily as fashion sunglasses too.

They are great for sun glare reductions and UV protection. Every pair comes with a protective hard case and cleaning cloth. If you play sports outdoors, make sure you wear great sunglasses to protect your eyes or risk eye problems later.
