There was not a lot of Rom and a little bit of Com in this film. It was enjoyable enough, especially when the other choices on offer at the cinema were not that enticing.
The storyline is a bit ridiculous. Pierce Brosnan plays a soon to be retired middle class wage slave but his company gets taken over the his pension has been asset stripped by the young upstart who took them over. In reality, this is not that easy to do as most corporate pension funds are ring fenced and are not that easy for a corporate raider to plunder, but I digress. Emma Thompson is his ex wife who need to rely on his pension for her future. There is a tiny spark left in their relationship which this films tries to rekindle.
In order to get back some of what they are due, the plan is to steal a $10m diamond that the upstart has gifted his soon to be wife. The rest of the film is their audacious plan to steal the diamond which includes a jaunt to the South of France via Paris. They are ably supported by their cohorts/neighbours played by Celia Imrie and Timothy Spall.
The plot needs thickening.
The caper is silly enough to slip in a few slapstick moments. The laughs are more like giggles.
I thought Emma Thompson’s wardrobe was perfect for her role. She looked really good in that film. The role does not exactly stretch her but she does make the film watchable. Pierce Brosnan just plays himself, a bit more like the Mama Mia version of himself but I am sure his fans will still swooon.
In short, we were amazed that this got made (part funded by Canal+) and got some UK distribution. I guess the 2 leads lends it enough weight to warrant this. Great cast, shame about the script.
This middle class, middle aged film would make a really good Sunday afternoon movie.
