I have only just started watching this series and am catching up. I did binge watch the first few seasons to catch up and although I didn’t think the idea of a drama on Motorcycle clubs would be of interest, it drew me in. In part due to an anthropological fascination with their culture and of course a bunch of hunky guys in tattoos and leather.
Sons of Anarchy is bloody, violent, edgy, unlawful, badass, twisted, dark, sick, gruesome and depraved. Yet millions love it. We love the bad guys, the story winds itself around the lives of these lawless bikers and makes us want to side with them. Over the seasons, it draws us into their world, their families, their relationships. Under the violent wrapping, there is heart. A lot of the plot is driven by loyalty, love, betrayal and family.

The series is written by Kurt Sutter who wrote a strong female character for his wife, Katey Segal who plays Gemma, the matriarch. The main protagonist is Jax Teller played by Charlie Hunnam.

I am going about this a bit backwards. Just finished watching the first couple of episodes of Season 7.
Season 7 – The Final Season
I’m not ready for this series to end even though at times it is excruciating to watch. We are promised a lot more deaths. Two of the main characters died at the end of the last season. There are going to be many, many more brutal deaths. Kurt Sutter promises an unexpected tragic ending, they will not be biking happily into the sunset.
Episode 1‘s opening is gruesome. I am guessing that this season is going to be a lot more violence, a lot more double crosses, betrayals and heartaches. That last scene, made me swear out loud, shocking. Jax is back in the Club, grieving over the death of his wife (who he didn’t seem to have much of a relationship with), plotting vengeance for her death. There is no more doubt in his mind. His pure focus is on getting revenge. He’s turned into the monster he was trying to avoid becoming over the last 6 seasons.
It looks like Jax/ Charlie is going to spend a lot of this season looking moody and staring blankly at people as intimidation. They should give him a bit more emotions to explore, to expand his craft. I hope that after this series, he can drop that swagger and learns to walk like a normal person again, not like a neanderthal.
Episode 2
The slow unravelling of Gemma’s story and her hidden secret. When Jax finds out she killed his wife, it is going to be bloody and emotional. Spoilers are saying that how he finds out will be totally unexpected. So Gemma is looking a bit remorseful when she she crime scene photos. She finds Wayne’s investigator id, will she kill him too?
The Club has descended into indiscriminate assassinations, all in the name of revenge. Why would the club members agree to do this en mass?
Juice is cracking up. Will he tell all and be the next dead body?
The dead bodies are piling up. The cast is thinning out. More mayhem.
Season 1
An introduction to the outlaw groups MC
An nide look at a sub culture
End of Season 2
They were supposed tobe on lockdown in the clubhouse. WHat were the 2 women gallavanting aorund town for? and with the baby too.
Ridiculous storyline
When Gemma shoots the girl, makes no sense for her to sit down on the couch for a breather. She’s a tough cookie. She’d know to walk straight out.
Then when they have cornered zedell in the deli, there were 3 of them. He was a sitting duck. WOuld have taken 1 minute to kill him. Ridiculous that they took a 30 second incredulous breath to tell the others about the call and then walked away.
The last unbelievable thing is when the Irish guy stabs one sac, he was busy and the idiot Tara could have so easily grabbed another knife or grabbed the gun and taken the upper hand. Utterly ridiculous.
What a sellout. I understand the need for a cliff hanger finale but the make it so unbelievable just runed the whole series. It could have been a strong finish.
Season 3
This new storyline involving the Irish and the IRA was a bit fractured. There is the requisite amoutn of blood and violence. Here the story about JT is unveiled a little more. THe cast do a greeat job, moving like a well oiled machine.
There are some really stupid side bars again.
THe season finale was a lot more believable than the last one. Not so many glaringly bad and ridiculous happenings. A dramtaic and bloody end to the much hated Agent Stahl. This series has done a great job at getting the audience to favour the bad guys. Roll on Season 4.
Season 4
Sees them coming out of prison and Jax has a new look which has more said about it than the show. Then the surfacing of Jt’s letters to Maureen is a recurring issue throughout this season. So Tara learns that JT was murdered by Gemma nd Clay. Why doens’t she share this with Jax. I guess then there wouldn’t be a Season 4.
A new baddie is introduced, Linc the USDA. He is altogether more sinister and more of a threat to the MC. He makes you want to really root for the outlaws.
The writing is getting better. The twists and turns are getting more convoluted and not so obvious. The finale is not as shocking as the previous seasons. The good guys are turning bad or is it vice versa?
Season 6
Does the environment corrupt?
Wow, what a turnaround this season. The plotting, double crossing and betrayal has moved up a notch. The idiot supposedly clever doctor has turned into a major manipulator. I think I am still siding with the bad guys. What’s up with the bad wig? Was it their intention to dress her that badly? She has never been well dressed as a doctor and dressed like a skank that didn’t differentiate her from the other skanks in the club house. Big fail for the costume designer there.
Am really liking the Jimmy Smits character. He plays metrosexual and sensitive really well, for being a badass gangster. A great foil for the other baddies out there.
Sons of Anarchy is available on iTunes and Netflix.
